SPRING HAS ARRIVED... Watch out for those daffodils!
Hundreds of daffodils quietly push up along our drive which passes in front of both of BlackTree Studio's kilns. Back in August 2015, when we constructed the new kiln, I vaguely thought about the dormant bulbs underground. Now, it's early spring, and Steve will soon be loading the kiln with about 200 pots, walking back and forth between the studio and the kiln... right over this ground where the daffodils are blooming.
I've fretted over this situation for the pass several days. So, I'll grab my shovel, and wagon to relocate the "neighborhood" to other garden spots around the house, and maybe even to the front of The Potter's Wife in New Carlisle. I'll get back to you on my progress... but I'm watching out for those daffodils.

Stoneware letters by Steve Skinner

|
|
|
February's shop renovation/expansion extended into the first two weeks of March. (My sincere thanks to local friends Keith and Rich for tearing down some walls). Finally, I quietly reopened the shop on March 17th. The space is lovely and functional: more room for the pottery; more room for the customers; more space in which to make personal purchase decisions; more space for conversations.
"I used to be afraid I'd knock something over, and now I feel so comfortable being in the space," remarked Paula Bartholeme, Edible Michiana Magazine's publisher, after visiting the renovated gallery and shop.
PLEASE STOP BY...
So, if you find yourself in SW Michigan's Harbor Country or on NW Indiana's Route 20 (historic Lincoln Highway) or biking Indiana's rolling rural backroads, you're close to The Potter's Wife at 111 E Michigan St, New Carlisle, IN. Open Thursday - Saturday, 10AM - 5PM EST.

The hearty Kettle Bowl is perfectly suited for family style chili, soups, stews or a fresh spring-green salad offering.

Each sculptural Cocoon Vase has a similar oval form, but each is made unique by gestures of porcelain inlay and an iron oxide stained stoneware outline at the vase's mouth.

And the Comeback: Titanium Blue Glaze |
|
|
|
Yes, we love a well-fired titanium blue glaze. But its unpredictable nature at cone 10's high temperatures (circa 2400 degrees F.) forced us to stop offering this glaze option to all but our closest customers. However, Steve's recent experiments with the glaze recipe, as well as, a few refinements to our kiln's dynamics and... Voilà we have success and A COMEBACK.
(Clockwise) ~ Shell Bowls: stoneware w/ iron oxide stained exterior, 7" dia. x 2.75" h.
~ Wrapped Bowl: stoneware w/blue glaze, 6" dia. x 6" h.
~ Wrapped Bowl: stoneware w/porcelain inlay, porcelain whitewashed base, 6" dia. x 6"h. |
