We are excited to celebrate the individual efforts of each student with our annual Solo Recital Day, held Saturday, April 23rd at the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh at 605 Morewood Avenue in Shadyside. Map it here

Three recitals, held at 10:00am, 12:30pm, and 2:30pm will feature students of all instrumental disciplines. Your teacher has communicated with you on which concert your child will be performing. Please arrive promptly 30 minutes before the start of your recital to tune and find your seats. Students are encouraged to dress in their best performance attire- black and white concert attire is not required at this recital series. Look your best! Practice Challenge winners and Graduating Seniors will be honored that day. Invite the whole family to this very special concert series.

EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC FAMILIES:
Toddler and Twinkler families, (especially those in Twinkler Transition) this is a wonderful opportunity for your little one to become more familiar with each instrument at CYM and hear students performing at every skill level. This recital is a chance for parents to not only see and hear the different instruments but also to see what their children will be doing in just a few months or years. Even if you are only able to stay for a portion of a concert, it is still an excellent experience!

SATURDAY FAMILIES:
As a reminder, there will be no Saturday classes held that day to allow all students to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity to see music education in action.
Please call CYM- 724-935-0505 or send an email to scheduling@youngmusicians.org to reschedule.

Spallek
Alexandra Spallek graduates from Pine-Richland High School and plans on attending The University of Sydney, Australia, to obtain a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Law. At Pine Richland, she is a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in many extra-curricular activities, including taking her mock trial team to state playoffs and serving as an officer of the Global Relations Club. Musically, Alexandra has been playing piano for 11 years, six of them at CYM with Ms. Kara and Ms. Sonia as her teachers.

She has played all genres of music but has an affinity for jazz and blues compositions. For 7 years, she has taken clarinet lessons and was a member of the Pine Richland school bands. Alexandra loves to dance, and has been for 14 years, covering many styles including: tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary, and pointe. In addition, Alexandra volunteers frequently for the local non-profit “Fund It Forward” and serves as the Youth representative on her church’s council. Alexandra hopes to continue playing piano and dancing in college.
Alexandra Schnatterly started at the Center for Young Musicians in the Early Childhood Music Classes as a toddler. She began studying violin with Ms. Leah at age five, and has participated in both private lessons and group classes for the last twelve years.
She has performed at the Legacy Theatre, PNC Park, Heinz Hall, the Carnegie Museum, Phipps Conservatory, The Children’s Museum, Sewickley Light-up Night, at area nursing homes, and on SLB radio.

As a high school student, she appeared with Chamber and Ensemble Groups with the Seneca Valley Choruses and String Orchestra, and competed at the District Level at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association.
She has performed as a violinist in musical productions of “Fiddler on the Roof” and “A Christmas Carol” at the Comtra Theatre in Cranberry, and served as both a member and solo violinist of the Youth Ensemble Group for the St. Ferdinand Youth Ministry.

Alexandra has always loved science and caring for animals, and plans to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine. She is a member of the National Science Honor Society and currently interns at the Good Shepherd Animal Hospital in Mars.
Alexandra has been awarded a four-year Trustee Scholarship to attend Allegheny College where she plans to begin the pre-veterinary program this fall.

April & May Department Groups
  • Cello Group 12:00 PM Saturday, April 9 in Wexford
  • Guitar Group 9:00 AM Saturday, April 16 in Wexford
  • Voice Group 11:00 AM Saturday, April 16 in Sewickley
  • Piano Group 9:00 AM Saturday, April 30 in Wexford
  • Violin Group 9:00 AM Saturday, May 7 in Wexford
Department Groups are very important! Plan to attend.

Monthly department groups are a meeting of each instrument’s full department- cello, piano, violin and viola, guitar, and voice. During the 45-60 minute group class, students may learn from a different teacher than their lesson instructor, focus on instrument or voice specific music literacy or technique goals. Examples of this could be things like musicality and phrasing, tempo, or stage presence. The class is also an excellent opportunity for students to perform their pieces for one another in a repertory class style. Sometimes department groups may work in conjunction with a master class, workshop or activity, or special performance, such as a spot on the Saturday Light Brigade Radio program or opening for a PSO concert.

Participation in department group is for everyone!

Please plan to attend this enriching part of your musical education at CYM.
