Congratulations. . .
To All Our Area Graduates

Dear Readers:
This is our annual Graduation /Construction themed newsletter . . . or should I say our inaugural Graduation Construction Themed Newsletter. This is, in fact, our one and only EVER construction / graduation day themed newsletter. And, may I add, if you actually read the newsletter last week you would know that in those previous sentences I simply cut out all "Mother's Day" and inserted ""Graduation" to save time and to see if you are paying attention.
I want to say "I love you" because last week construction season started and we are still here. Thanks for your support and would love to see you walking on down the "BOARDWALK." Yes, we do have a boardwalk now and although you can't walk "Under The Boardwalk" as in the famous Drifters tune (come in and I will try to hum it for you) you can walk on the boardwalk as in "Advance to Boardwalk. . . " a in Monopoly.
We are excited to have a boardwalk instead of a traditional sidewalk. It is bouncy which, if you choose to do any high impact sports down Main Street, you will be less likely to injure your femur as opposed to running on traditional cement sidewalks.
Also, if you are a vandal and choose to vandalize downtown, I would encourage you to get artistic on the boardwalk as it is transitional -- just no profanities or gang marks please.
Oh, and one more thing. We have a fence on our boardwalk which makes it impossible for you, if you are walking down the street, to be abducted by white cars with tinted windows and loud mufflers. We don't even ALLOW any cars near you if you are walking down the street. Super cool downtown. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
Oh, and about graduation. Happy happy graduation to all you seniors out there. A shout out to our staff:
Meg Super -- Amazing Bookseller and runner and human being, Graduating from Minot High
Erin Black -- Amazing Bookseller and tennis player and human being, Graduating from Minot Sate University
Brian Nies -- Son Extraordinaire and so much more -- Graduating from NDSCS in Wahpeton. Right when I finally am secure enough to drive a car that doesn't live half its life in a shop (lknock on wood) I have a mechanic in the family (knock on wood).
WAY TO GO GRADUATES. Proud of all of you.
Read well and check out all our great grad ideas below and in the store.

as you walk in the door and don't forget THE GIFT CARD!! Not just any gift card BUT THE GIFT CARD. Which is, of course, our gift card. THE MAIN STREET BOOKS GIFT CARD!! It's a great gift choice for the high school grad to pick up some summer reading because it might just be their last chance at pleasure reading for a few more years of hitting the (not-so-fun) college books.

NOW THIS may not seem like such a big deal, doing what you are supposed to do and not doing the opposite, and it really isn't a big deal. Surviving the death of a parent, parenthood, divorce, the injury of a child -- NOW THOSE ARE BIG DEALS!! You graduated high school. That's good. You graduated college. That's great. You got your own kids through babyhood, the tweens, the teens, high school and college IN ONE PIECE???
THAT IS PHENOMENAL.
Shoot, I should be making congratulations graduates mom and dad coasters . . . now there's a real accomplishment.
Okay, I said my peace.

Just out in HARDCOVER TODAY
LaRose
By Louise Erdrich
$27.99
May 2016 Indie Next List
“When a hunting accident results in the death of his neighbor's son, Landreaux Iron follows native tradition and offers his own son, LaRose, to the bereaved family. Thus begins a powerful story of anger, love, hurt, and joy among a group of families and neighbors living in a small community in the North Dakota hinterland. Erdrich's luminous prose captures each character's struggle to overcome their worst impulses - whether it's a handicapped man's long-nurtured quest for revenge, or the pain of a mother withholding love from her daughter - and reaches into the distant past to reveal the story of the young boy's namesake, the original LaRose. Muted on the surface, but with a heart that beats strong, Erdrich's latest novel is a book to be treasured.”

The Big Book of Why Revised and Updated
By the Editors of Time Life Books
$19.95
Why do we have eyebrows? Why are Dogs' noses wet? Why does the earth have a moon? Why do we marry crazy men and then wonder what the he** is wrong with us? Why are some people color blind? Why do our spouses promise to let us garden in peace and then they have to micromanage every single step we make until we find ourselves driving 80 miles an hour down the wrong side of the freeway with a bottle of Jack in our laps? And why, oh why, is the sky blue? Well, I don't know if it can answer all these questions but the ones we don't need a therapist for I think this book might handle them pretty well.
