Kimberly's Carats

The first known emerald mines were in Egypt, dating from at least 330 BC. Cleopatra was known to have a passion for emerald, and used it in her royal adornments.

In 2011, Elizabeth Taylor's emerald pendant sold for $6,578,500 - a record $280,000 per carat.

The Incas had already been using emeralds in their jewelry and religious ceremonies for 500 years before the arrival of the Spanish.

Bioluminescent Jewelry:

Have you ever walked on the beach in the evening and seen sparks in the sand? Or sometimes it might be so prominent that you can pat the sand or water and see your hand print? What you are seeing is bioluminescence from algae.

We recently found an article that describes how you can wear living jewelry that glows in the dark. Several people have collaborated to come up with a jewelry collection called The Mermaid's Lunchbox. The unique necklace features a small glass vial hanging from a gold chain. Within the vial is a tiny algae habitat, where a bloom of dinoflagellates swim in water.

Dinoflagellates are a naturally bioluminescent type of algae that glow when agitated, so anytime you shake the vial, the necklace will glow with blue light. Scientists believe that the algae’s bioluminescence is a defense mechanism to protect them from predators. Shaking the pendant will activate the algae’s glow, but normal movement while wearing the necklace will activate sparks of bright algae glow.

We haven't seen this yet in person. Let us know if you find one!

It is emerald’s appearance and color that make this gemstone instantly recognized. A variety of the beryl species, this famous green gem has long been associated with eternal spring, new life and healing. In ancient times, it was said to promise love, denote honesty and bring success to those born in May.
