Beneficial bats eat thousands of mosquitoes and other insects nightly - welcome them with a
bat house!

Seed moths can be a problem during the hot months. Their eggs are found in most birdseed. Store your seed in bins and use Moth Traps to keep them to a minimum. Consider buying smaller amounts of seed during the slower feeding months of late summer and early fall. Cole's bagged seed is nitrogen-purged to help eliminate pests.

Don't forget to empty out your rain gauges, plant trays and outdoor pet bowls often - more favorite places for mosquitoes to breed.

What's bugging you? Everyone loves spending time outdoors in the summertime, but no one loves bitey mosquitoes ruining all the fun, ants and bees in the hummingbird feeders or webby seed moths clumping up the bird seed. Don't let pesky insects keep you from having a great summer! Here are a few suggestions:
Try our new Mosquito Sticks and Mosquito Candles from Murphy's Naturals along with our always popular Patio Eggs and Skeeter Spray. Both are safe and effective, all natural alternatives to using D.E.E.T., and have a wonderful, herbal scent!

Our favorite saucer-style hummingbird feeders like the Hummer Highrise (pictured left) have built in ant moats so ants can't reach the nectar ports. If your feeder doesn't have a built in ant moat or you find the water evaporates too quickly, we sell larger individual ant moats.
There is an added benefit to saucer feeders - bees and wasps are not nearly as attracted to them since they don't leak or drip, and the nectar sits low and out of their reach. If wasps are still a problem, they can be distracted away from nectar feeders with a wasp trap.

Keep it moving! Stagnant water provides a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Fresh water is very important to birds, so whisk out your bird bath every day or so and refill. Water Wigglers (pictured left) can help by agitating the water. They are battery-operated, easy to use, and work in most bird baths.
