Super Moon
Image
November 14th
Get outside November 14th and take a look at the
"Super Moon"

This is the closest that the moon will be to the earth since 1948.

November's full moon is also called the Full Beaver Moon.
Meteor Showers
Taurids
will peak
November 11th - 12th

Earth passes through the Taurids every year. Unlike the Perseids seen back in August. The Taurids move slower and there are fewer.

Grab a blanket and a dark place and sit back and watch. You may see only 5-10 an hour, but they are worth the wait.

Leonids
will peak
November 17th
Look towards Leo the Lion in the dawn hours.

The Leonid meteor shower is said to have produced some of the greatest meteor storms in history.

Garden Terms
Image
Annual
You would think by the term 'Annual' that the plants would come back every year 'Annually'. This is not the case. Annuals are plants that grow for one growing season and are done at the end of the season. You have to replant them each year. Examples of annuals are; petunias, impatiens, geraniums and coleus.
Image
Perennial
Perennials are plants that come back year after year. Examples of Perennials in Ohio are; Hosta, Coneflower, Butterfly Bush and Daylilies.
Last Minute Garden Check List
Image
With winter fast approaching it is a good idea to get out in the garden and take advantage of the warmer temperatures. There are many chores that can be done now to save you time and energy in the spring.
  • Make sure to do a good weeding of your garden. Getting rid of weeds now will mean less weeds in the spring.

  • Remove all annuals and vegetables and compost them.

  • After a hard freeze but before the ground has frozen. Dig up any Cannas, Dahlias, Elephant Ears or Tuberous Begonias and store them for the season.

  • Clean out bird houses and bird baths. Bird houses can be placed back up for winter roosting birds. Bird baths should be kept full of water for the winter. Use a bird bath heater to keep water from freezing.

  • Perennial foliage should be left alone until Spring, unless it is diseased. If diseased trim off the foliage and toss in trash.

  • Store lawn ornaments in a garage or shed for the season.

  • Put away planters in a garage or garden shed. If left outside in the elements they can crack from the expanding and contracting of the soil in the pot. If unable to store inside remove soil and place pots upside down next to the house.

  • Protect young tree trunks from rutting deer with tree trunk protectors.

  • Store hoses and other gardening tools away for the season.

  • Avoid heavy winter mulching until after the ground is frozen, usually after Thanksgiving.

  • Avoid pruning roses until after the ground is frozen. For grafted roses put 10-12 inches of soil or mulch on the crown of your plant or add a rose cone/ collar. Otherwise, if you own a Knock Out, shrub, own-root or ground cover rose, leave them alone until March / April.
