Calliope Hummingbird
- Bob Zaremba
Most all Ruby-throats have departed for their wintering grounds in Mexico and Central America, but we do have winter hummingbirds
- a dozen species have been documented in Georgia! The most common species is the Rufous, with smaller numbers of Black-chinnedCalliope and others. These birds breed out west and find our winter weather tolerable as long as they have a reliable food source. Keep those feeders going year round and let us know if you see any hummingbirds now through March 1st. We've already had several reports this season!

Where have all my feeder birds gone?
We often hear this question this time of year.
Do not worry! Autumn is the season when Mother Nature provides a bounty of seeds, nuts, berries and insects for animals to fatten up on and store for winter. As natural foods dwindle and temperatures drop, expect all your regulars to flock back to your feeders.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and loved ones, free from stress and political debate ;). Our tradition is to spend Black Friday eating leftovers while watching the birds in our yard, or going on a nature hike, away from the crazy malls and hectic traffic, recharging for the upcoming busy holiday season.
So take it easy on Friday, and we hope you will join us on Saturday, November 26th, when we celebrate one of our most important days of the year - Small Business Saturday.
