Apollo and Artemis to be Auctioned in Geneva

Later this month the Apollo and Artemis Diamonds will be the stars of a Sotheby's auction in Geneva. They are viewed as the most important pair of earrings ever to be offered at auction according to a statement released by Sotheby's.

The earrings consist of two large pear-shaped gems of different hues and they will be auctioned separately.

The 14.54-carat Apollo Blue is described as the largest internally flawless fancy vivid blue diamond ever to be offered at auction and is estimated to sell for between $38-50 million. The 16-carat Artemis Pink which is described as fancy intense pink is expected to bring $12.5-18 million.

The diamonds were named after Apollo, the Greek god of music and of the Sun, and Artemis, his twin sister, who was goddess of the hunt and of the Moon. In Greek and Roman mythology, diamonds were believed to be the tears of the gods.

May Birthstone

May's birthstone is Emerald. Rulers and royalty have been utilizing Emerald's alluring green hues for more than 4,000 years. At the time of Alexander the Great, Greek miners were working Emerald mines. Later the Emeralds from these mines were given to Cleopatra and the mines were renamed Cleopatra's Mines. These mines were found on the Red Sea Coast in the early 1800's.

The Muzo and Chivor mines in Columbia produce some of the world's finest Emeralds although very fine Emeralds come from other areas around the world. Most Emeralds are treated with oils or epoxy resins to improve their transparency and appearance. This is a common and accepted treatment.
