Myth: We should take down our hummingbird feeders after Labor Day.
Fact: Absolutely not!
We are still in the peak of Ruby-throat migration, which continues over the next month or so. Even after our Ruby-throats have departed, we recommend leaving at least one feeder up year round. Many western species, particularly Rufous Hummingbirds, winter in the Southeast and your feeder can be an important food source for them!

Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by Harvey's devastation.
We are often asked how birds fare in hurricanes. Sadly, some are injured or perish, but birds are more resilient than you'd think. We've read many reports of songbirds and hummingbirds coming to feeders as the eye of the storm passes over. Radar indicates other birds and bats move inland to safer locations. The insect population will soon flourish in flooded regions, providing even more food for hungry migrating birds.

We are getting excited about our hummingbird banding event this Saturday from 8am - 11am at Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw! We visited last week and there were dozens of hummingbirds in the gardens and the butterfly house was bustling with butterflies. Don't forget to arrive during the early hours of the event for the most hummingbird activity and the best chance for your child to release a banded bird; it really slows down later in the morning.

Fiona the Tawny Owl from Hawk Talk will also be there and for a small "mouse money" donation, you can hold her on a glove! Explore the gardens afterwards, and be sure to visit A Garden With Wings.

Go to the
Smith-Gilbert Gardens website and pre-purchase tickets to save $3 off the cost of admission. You will also find directions to the garden and parking information. Because onsite parking is limited, it is recommended you take the shuttle provided from Swift-Cantrell Park. We hope to see you there!
