Several shorebirds and pelagic species were blown inland by Hurricane Irma, but one particular bird's story had a very happy ending! Originally found on a dirt road in southwest Georgia, a GOS volunteer drove this
White-tailed Tropicbird (pictured above) to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, where it immediately perked up and took flight when released.
Also spotted by area birders - Magnificent Frigatebird, Sabine's Gull, Long-tailed Jaeger, Bridled, Sooty, Common and Black Terns, Black-bellied Plover, Red Knot and the first inland record for an American Oystercatcher.

We hope you made it through Tropical Storm Irma without too much damage to your homes and yards. It was very interesting to watch the birds' behavior before, during and after the storm, especially our hummingbirds - feeding heavily as the barometric pressure dropped and returning quickly between strong bands. Birds are amazing in their ability to face many dangers and challenges in their environments.
