Happy New Year!

It's always so hard to believe that another year has passed.  Our parents warned us and we as parents warn our own children... "time passes so quickly, enjoy today."

So true.  In 2017, the Russell family has welcomed another grandson (Theodore), our son's fiancee (Claire), and our daughter's fiance (Jesse).  2018 promises to be a busy and happy year with two weddings!  The Whitson family also welcomed another grandson (Cohen) as well as their son's fiancee (Lisa).

As a business, we've welcomed new and returning staff.  In the spirit of being a family business, our daughter Hayley has joined the business and is assuming the operational responsibilities while Helen focuses on continuing to build out the medical aspect with diabetic footwear fittings and a stronger move into pediatrics.   Ryan (son of Richard) joined us while he finishes graduate school. Carmen (daughter of running realtor Ivette) joined us while she finishes high school and Francesco is back for a few months.

We're pretty excited for 2018.  We're parting with our tradition of hosting a Mother's Day and Father's Day run.  Instead, we're combining the two into a Families First 5k.  (When you have two of your children's weddings twenty days apart, it's a challenge!)

Also in 2018, Hayley will be keeping us all on our toes as she creates a more exciting shopping experience within the store and hosts more educational offerings from Garmin, Altra, bra clinics, private events and more.

We wish you a successful, happy, and fulfilling year and hope that you achieve your goals. If we can help in any way, we hope that you’ll let us help you.

Helen, Mark, Hayley, Bruce, John, Richard, Karen, Bailey, Ryan, and Francesco

Tips for Staying Healthy in 2018
Tips for Staying Healthy in 2018
Happy New Year!  With many of us setting fitness goals going into the new year, it’s especially important to know how to stay healthy whilst working towards your goals.  Here are nine (9) fairly obvious but important tips that may help:  [read more…]

Your 2018 Foot Health Account

Here's a new concept... think about your feet as having a "Foot Health Account (FHA)."  You make deposits into your FHA everytime you wear the proper footwear for the activity at hand.   Wear shoes that aren't appropriate for the activity causes a withdrawal from your FHA.  So, here are a few quick ways to ensure your FHA stays fully topped off:
  • Proper shoes for the activity
  • Wicking socks
  • Appropriate length, width, and shape for all shoes
  • Appropriate amount of cushioning in your shoes
  • Appropriate amount of support in your shoes
  • Replace shoes as they near end of life.  For running shoes, it's either 300-500 miles for a standard cushion shoe, or 600-800 miles for a premium cushion shoe.
  • Treat dress shoes like eating dessert "not too much and not too often."
  • Listen to your feet and seek appropriate attention if you're in pain.
At the Dog Park
From real world experience, when at the dog park, position yourself so that you're protected from behind.  Our daughter was run into by a pack of joyful playing dogs from behind and was thrown hard enough that she suffered an avulsion fracture of her foot resulting in many weeks healing in a boot!

Back for the spring!  We are offering a three month Aerobic Base Training Program, a powerful tool to specifically enable runners to be truly ready to begin their fall 10 Mile to Marathon Distance Training Program.

The program goals are:
  • Improve runners aerobic capacity, or Maximum Aerobic Function
  • Enhance runners ability to burn fat as primary fuel source
  • Increase running speed (Aerobic Speed) without increased effort
  • Improve running form to reduce risk of injury
  • Increase lean muscle mass and reduce fat (weight loss is not a specific goal but often a result)
You will be healthier, stronger and better prepared to undertake the rigors of training with much less risk of injury …. hence, a more successful race experience.

The program is based on the training principles developed by Dr. Mark Cucuzella known as “the Running Doctor" http://naturalrunningcenter.com/who-is-nrc and Jay Dicharry, PT, REP Director http://www.reporegon.com/about-rep/jay-dicharry-rep-director.  These training principles are the foundation of the development and continuing practices of their organization Healthy Running.

The program will also use a specific training method called the 180 Running Rule developed by a close associate of the Healthy Running Center, Dr Phil Maffetone https://philmaffetone.com/method/. This training method requires runners to run at a very specific heart rate, determined by subtracting your age from 180. For many runners, the resulting heart rate will significantly slow the running pace. The purpose of consistent slow running is to build what Dr. Maffetone calls Maximum Aerobic Function (MAF). The idea is that the runner gradually runs faster paces at the same heart rate as MAF improves.

This program also has diet recommendations, not to reduce food intake but avoid foods with added sugar or high glycemic carbohydrates.

This is a proven method for improving your aerobic capacity and increasing running speed.  Intrigued?  Read more and register at:
