95 Carat Diamond
Did you know that diamonds are mined in Canada? Recently a 95 carat white diamond was found in the Northwest Territories’ Gahcho Kué mine. The diamond is the 4th largest produced by the mine and the largest gem quality stone since the mine opened two years ago.

Kimberly's Carats

Ruby has accumulated a host of legends over the centuries. People in India believed that rubies enabled their owners to live in peace with their enemies. In Burma (a ruby source since at least 600 AD—now called Myanmar), warriors possessed rubies to make them invincible in battle. However, it wasn’t enough to just wear the rubies. They had to insert them into their flesh and make them part of their bodies.

Olivine in Hawaii

People near the volcano eruption in Hawaii have recently been seeing green crystals raining from the sky. The crystals are Olivine, one of the most abundant minerals found below the earth's surface. When professionally cut and polished the gemstone gives off a beautiful, bright green sheen. Very common in Hawaii, Olivine has transformed some of the Big Island's beaches green in recent years. Papakolea green sand beach on the southern tip of the Big Island is entirely made out of Olivine sand and is one of only four green beaches in the world, the others are located in Guam, Norway and the Galapagos Islands.

July Birthstone

July's birthstone is Ruby. There’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in celebration of a July birthday. Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love. Ruby is a variety of the gem species corundum. It is harder than any natural gemstone except diamond, which means a ruby is durable enough for everyday wear. Fine-quality ruby is extremely rare, and the color of the gem is most important to its value. The most prized color is a medium or medium dark vivid red or slightly purplish red. If the gem is too light or has too much purple or orange, it will be called a fancy-color sapphire.
