About Jim Holden & Sonia Marsh

Jim Holden will take you back home to his roots, and share his passion for the authentic African Safari. You may not know about the authentic safari, but Jim will captivate you with his story-telling skills and may even make you feel like you’ve stepped back into the movie Out of Africa with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.
Jim was born in Zambia, and attended school in Zimbabwe and South Africa. He worked in the travel industry in Kenya, and enjoys “stepping back into Africa” several times a year.
We like to call him the “Crocodile Dundee” of Africa, and as a born story-teller, Jim will charm you with his accent, captivate you with his humor, and stimulate your senses as he takes you on a journey to discover the wildlife and people of Africa.
Jim now lives and works in Newport Beach and is passionate about helping people realize their dreams of visiting Africa.

I’m Sonia Marsh, a Safari Consultant with Holden Safaris. We design small group Safaris with a specific theme. I started “We Travel with a Purpose” combining learning activities with life-changing wildlife experiences. I lead small groups of twelve; the perfect number to create a friendly atmosphere, get to know one another and share our African adventures. Our friendships continue after we return to the U.S. Here are some examples of my small-group Safaris in 2019 and 2020.
- Women Travel with a Purpose-We visit a local school in Nairobi with the Director of the African Child Foundation. We’ll spend time with the children, take them on their first Safari game drive, visit the elephant orphanage, and have a chance to adopt our baby elephant, feed the giraffes at the giraffe center and visit the Karen Blixen House where Out of Africa was filmed. Finally, we’ll see the BIG 5, float over the Masai Mara in a hot air balloon, and end with a sumptuous champagne brunch out in the bush.
- There’s An Elephant in My Kitchen-Inspired by the legacy of the “Elephant Whisperer,” Lawrence Anthony, an international conservationist. We will stay at his lodge in South Africa, interact with the elephant herd he rescued, and meet his French wife, Francoise Malby Anthony who started a rhino rehabilitation center. We’ll learn about her baby rhinos Thabo and Ntombi, and receive a signed copy of her recent book: An Elephant in My Kitchen. We then meet world-renowned wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Johan Marais, founder of “Saving the Survivors” an organization that treats endangered wildlife that has been attacked and injured by poachers. Dr. Marais is the author of The Great Tuskers of Africa. Finally a stay at Phinda lodge where we’ll have fabulous sightings of the Big 5 and a chance to visit the local Zulus, taste traditional foods, and a special one-on-one reading with a local “sangoma” (Spiritual Healer)
- Magic of Storytelling- A writers’ retreat. There’s no better place to find your inspiration than in the midst of Africa’s wildlife. Experience the BIG 5 in Botswana, and the majestic Smoke that Thunders at Victoria Falls. Share your writing and conversations with other writers, and enjoy daily morning and evening game drives, sunset cruises, and motivation from our professional workshop leader.
