World's Largest Pearl?

We recently posted this on our Facebook page and thought we should repeat it here. Found in 1959, the "Giga Pearl" weighs 61 pounds and could be worth up to $90 million. It has been certified by the Gemological Institute of America as the largest natural blister pearl in the world. The pearl was recently shown off in Ontario by the owner.

Graduation

Before we know it graduations will be starting up at area colleges and high schools. Congratulations to everyone who is graduating and best wishes. A special congrats to Kimberly who will be heading to the University of Lynchburg in the fall to continue her education and be a member of the field hockey team. It seems like only yesterday that she had her first day of pre-K.  Where did the time go?

Kimberly's Carats

There are other green gems but emerald is the one that’s always associated with the lushest landscapes and the richest greens. Ireland is the Emerald Isle. Seattle is the Emerald City. Rome’s Pliny the Elder described emerald as “…nothing greens greener”. He further said that early lapidaries restored their eyes by looking at emeralds. The color green is known to relieve stress and eye strain.

Is that Carrot or Carat?

Did you see this? In 2017 a rather lumpy carrot was pulled up on a farm in Alberta. The carrot had its lumpy shape in part because it had grown through an engagement ring. The ring's owner had been weeding in 2004 when she lost her ring. Embarrassed she went out an bought a similar, cheaper version of the ring rather than tell her husband. As can be seen the carrot grew straight through the ring which allowed it to be found. The ring also still fit. As strange as this might sound, a similar carrot with a ring attached was found in Sweden in 2011.

May Birthstone

May's birthstone is Emerald. Emeralds, symbols of rebirth, are believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune and youth. Emerald was mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. It was attributed such great power that it was often used in powdered form to prevent epilepsy, stop bleeding, cure dysentery and fever and avert panic. In addition, emerald was thought to make its owner eloquent and persuasive, bring joy, give the ability to foretell the future and improve memory. Today, most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and Zambia. The availability of high-quality emerald is limited; consequently, treatments to improve clarity are performed regularly.
