Hello Great Gardeners,
The last couple of days have been gorgeous. I got my flower planters planted, and now I have to weed the front of my house. It seems like there is never enough time in the day to get everything done.
If you have been waiting to plant, it is now safe to say that our frost date has passed. Temperatures are going to be up in the '80s this coming week. Make sure to water your newly planted plants. I know it may sound like mindless automaton every year, but proper watering is essential to make your plants survive and thrive. Make sure to check out our watering tips on our website.

Many people question us about what may be chewing on their plant. They want to get rid of the problem as quickly as possible without realizing that maybe they are killing off something that they are genuinely trying to attract to their garden.
Butterflies are on the decline due to unneeded pesticide use. Before using a pesticide, think about if it is genuinely needed. In many cases, caterpillars of a species feed on only a minimal variety of plants. Most butterfly caterpillars never cause the leaf damage we associate with some moth caterpillars such as bagworms, tent caterpillars, or gypsy moths.
If you do need to spray for another bug that may be infesting your plant, do so sparingly.

Host plants are the nurseries of the garden. Because tiny caterpillars cannot travel far to find their food, the female butterfly locates and lays her eggs on only the type of plant that the caterpillar can use as food. Most species of caterpillars are particular about the type of plants they can eat. If the egg is not placed on the correct plant, the caterpillar hatching from that egg will not survive. Listed below are some caterpillars found in Ohio and their host plants.
