And Sew On... June 10th, 2019

My dad doing something he loved!

My dad helping with the toddler class at church 1984

Last Father's Day I wrote about one of my dad's mentors, a cowboy poet named Pecos Higgins. This year I penned a poem about one my mentors ... my dad, Hal Clarkson.

My dad was a tall Texan that wore a big straw hat and boots.
Because of an eye patch, our oldest grandson calls him a
cowboy pirate - the title really suits.

My dad would get my attention
by a thump with a finger as big as a stick.
Rest assured it took just one
and it would be lickety split.

Some of my childhood friends
who have been with me for many a-mile,
Reminisce how that thump reminded them
of people picking melons down the produce aisle.

As a journeyman diesel mechanic
he was well-known throughout his trade
where truckers would come from miles around
because of the perfect adjustments he made.

His resume of skills was much more diverse
than providing for his family.
He would research by reading
and then master any challenge rather handily.

Some of the skills I remember -
He was an outdoorsman, par-excellent.
Always being the guy who caught fish
even when everyone else could not.

His culinary skills were amazing -
grabbing whatever ingredients that came to mind,
And by using his 25 year old sourdough start,
a better biscuit you could not find.

This six-foot three-inch hard-shelled man
demonstrated a much softer side.
He loved people, his Lord and family-
who were his biggest source of pride.

I value the time on this earth that I could gain insight from him
one of the wisest of all men.
Also counting my blessings
I consider William "Hal" Clarkson as one of my dearest friends.
