"The Print Shop"
The above phrase has been a part of my vocabulary since 1972 when as a freshman at West Phoenix High School, I took a general shop class that introduced me to all the industrial arts classes that our school had to offer. The first shop class I began my year-long journey in the general shop program was the print shop! Within a few days, I was enamored with the concept of printing in general. Our introduction to the printing process was hand-setting lead type from a California Job Case and then actually printing those projects on a semi-manual Platen Press. Then we learned the basics of offset printing, a more modern process which my company still uses today. Our instructor, Clarence Johnson, even instructed us in the technique of screen printing where myself and some of my classmates printed our own custom tee shirts. I thank Mr. Johnson for helping me see what an amazing industry printing is and the vast employment opportunities that could be achieved. He also opened my eyes to the concept of creating something from my ideas and then transferring that creativity onto a blank canvas. This concept intrigued me greatly, so much so, that I began my printing career in 1976
and am still selling printing some 43 years later.
A few months ago our wonderful Moda rep, Sonja Mann, came by on her regularly scheduled stop to show us some of the new Moda collections. When she opened up her "Mary Poppins" suitcase full of fabric samples, she revealed the above super cool "The Print Shop" collection designed by Sweetwater!
Because of my history in the industry and being a part owner in a print shop for over 27 years, this wonderful collection immediately started plucking at our heartstrings. What else could we do but to take several charm packs and other coordinating fabrics and then hand them off to our daughter, Racheal, to incorporate them into this beautiful quilt! As soon as we saw Racheal's finished quilt, our next challenge was to find a long-arm quilting pattern that would embody the theme of this quilt. I had a specific idea in mind. Vickie & Patsy searched high and low for just the right one and Patsy, while Vickie was struggling to enjoy her Hawaiian vacation ha ha, sent over this pattern that got my immediate approval.
Because I sell printing and envelopes wholesale to almost every print shop in the state, I keep pretty good tabs on what equipment is where. I wanted to shoot some pictures to try and capture some of my histories and the character of this quilt. All in all, I believe all objectives were achieved in this project.
The above pictures were shot in a local Phoenix print shop and the printing press is a 1953 German-made Heidelberg Windmill Press. I want to thank my friend, Dwight, for letting me use his shop and classic equipment for a backdrop that took me and "The Print Shop" quilt on a stroll down memory lane!
We would love for you to drop by and take that memory lane stroll with us remembering your home-town print shop and finding inspiration for something fun!

Happy Print Shop Quilting!
