"Check" Out Our New Hometown Hockey Line!

Surprisingly to some people, the Phoenix area has had a pretty long history of ice hockey. I'm sure this influence has grown from the vast number of residents that hail from areas that deem hockey as their favorite sport! The Phoenix Roadrunners were a minor league hockey club in the Western Hockey League that made its debut in 1967. The Roadrunners were a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and gave all of those cold country transplants something to remind them of home! For some reason, this desert born kid always had a fascination with the sport and saw visions of myself gliding across the ice only to hear the public address announcer say "He shoots! He scores!" My intrigue for the sport was fueled on a trip to Whitehorse Yukon Territory in Canada when a friend of our family gave me his Victoriaville stick - seen on the table above. That stick and I have scored thousands of goals, in my mind, since it was handed to me in 1971.

For a middle-class family with 3 kids, ice hockey was NOT in the budget so my dreams were dispelled until I had graduated high school and was working full time. One of my other hockey enthusiast friends and I voiced out loud to each other one day, "If we want to play hockey, maybe we should learn to skate!" Well isn't that a novel idea? Needless to say, from that point forward, a good portion of my life was spent at one of the 4 Valley-wide ice rinks learning and then sharpening my skating skills. On one of those sharpening my skills skating evenings, a group of kids came onto the ice which included some beautiful girls. One of these girls just happens to be my sweetheart, Debe, and yes that's where we met - at the ice rink! I will finish that story at another time. As my skating ability progressed my friend and I started playing open hockey until I eventually joined a full-checking men's league at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe. The above picture is of a very young me in my team's jersey sponsored by D's Lounge a local watering hole.

Throughout my entire skating/hockey experience, my dream was to skate on a natural pond - something that I had never found in my travels in  Arizona. My sister lived in Manchester, New Hampshire at this time, so after a few a calls, my arrangements were made and off to the Northeast I embarked. My suitcase for this epic trip was my hockey bag minus my stick. After picking me up at the Boston Airport, we headed to her home in Manchester and the nearest hockey store to purchase a stick. The following day my dream came true as she dropped me off at "Doors Pond" and I skated most of the day only heading into the warming hut once. The freedom of skating with a stick, puck, and no boards was everything I thought it be...amazing! Throughout that week I was a part of several pick-up games -thus when seeing this new Hometown Hockey collection all those wonderful memories came flooding back. For many of you, Debe included, pond skating was a way of life, but for this desert kid this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will remember my entire life!

I hope that sharing my Hometown Hockey experience will evoke some of those same feelings for you or a loved one and inspire you to create something that can remind them of those days when all that mattered was the pond, your stick, a puck and the shout - "He shoots! He scores!"
