Gemstones - Sapphire
Tom Newcomer, President/Owner, GIA Graduate Gemologist
Sapphire is the birthstone for September and anyone that knows me knows that sapphire is my favorite gemstone. Sapphire is the variety of gemstone family called corundum of which ruby is the other predominant variety. What many don’t realize is that sapphire comes in a wide variety of colors besides blue including, green, orange, pink, brown, violet, yellow and colorless. Sapphire has a hardness of 9 out of 10 making it a great gemstone for an engagement ring or every day wear.

Approximately 70% of the value of colored gemstones is set by the quality of color. We measure the sensation of color by the hue, tone and saturation level. Hue measures the overall sensation created by the primary and secondary colors. Tone refers to how light or dark the gemstone appears. If a gem is too dark and the color sensation appears inky and not appealing. If too light the gem appears washed out. Saturation refers the intensity of color from vivid to dull. In general, the more vivid, the more desirable the gemstone. All three attributes of color are quantified by the gemologist into a color code which is assigned to each gemstone.

Blue sapphire owes its color to trace elements of iron and titanium. Sapphires have been treasured for millennia and are mined in approximately 20 countries today. Gem quality sapphires today come from Sri Lanka, Burma, Madagascar and Thailand. The United States produces a beautiful steely blue sapphire from Montana but in very small quantities. Most sapphires are heat treated to improve their overall appearance and sapphires without any heat treatment go for a premium.

The most prized sapphires have a rich blue or violet blue color with medium tone and vivid intensity that almost appears to glow from within. But, as you can see from the diagram, sapphire has many color choices.
