Issue 125
Hello Great Gardeners,

We need your thoughts and prayers for my mother in law Mitzie. She is in the hospital with what they are thinking is a spinal stroke. Right now, she does not have use of her legs, but we are praying that she will make a full recovery.

On another note, cooler temperatures have finally come our way, and it is supposed to rain this weekend as well. Now is the perfect time to get out into the garden and plant some trees and shrubs. If you have not brought your houseplants inside, you need to do so. We are expecting our first frost this weekend.
As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, hit reply. I would love to hear from you. Have a great-gardening day.

Sincerely,
Holly

Time To Bring In The Houseplants
Image
What is wrong with the picture above? Well many things for starters. Pictured above is my Schefflera from home. As you can see from the picture, it does need some tender loving care before being brought back inside for the winter. Here are the steps I plan on taking before bringing it back inside.

1) Pull Out Weeds: As you can see from the photo, I have grass growing in my pot. So weeding it is a big priority for me. I don't want this going into the house with the weeds because they could harbor some unwanted guests.

2) Check If Needs Re-potted: My Schefflera has not been re-potted in a few years. This year I need to replace the container with a new one.

Scale On House Plant
3). Check for bugs: Every year, my Schefflera gets scale during the summer. I don't treat it when it is outside because I don't like using insecticides when beneficial insects are around.

This year especially, I had monarch caterpillars go to chrysalis on the plant, and in case they took a bite by mistake; I did not want to kill them. When I go to bring in my houseplant, I wash off all the leaves — making sure to get the undersides as well as the tops of the leaves. I then use Bonide Systemic Houseplant Control. If you have animals that chew on your plants, you will not want to use this product. Instead, use insecticidal soap. The Bonide Houseplant control I like to use because it goes through the whole plant, and any insects that chew on the plant will get killed. It also lasts up to 2 months. My cat does not nibble on my plants, but I do cover the top of the pot with multiple layers of tinfoil so she can't get into the potting soil. It keeps her from using my houseplant as a kitty litter box and protects her from any insecticides. When I water, I make sure to empty the saucer afterward, so my pets do not get sick from the water.
Once I have moved my houseplant into the house, it does go through a bit of shock. It is usual for it to lose some leaves.

October Fun Facts
Image
October was originally the eighth month of the Roman calendar. It comes from the Latin word "octo" meaning eight. Later, it became the 10th month when January and February were added to the Calendar.

The traditional flower of the month of October is the calendula, symbolizing comfort, healing, protection and grace.

Every three years, the October Full Moon is also the Harvest Moon. This particular name is given to the Full Moon which is closest to the September equinox, which is the start of fall in astronomy.

According to a recent study in Italy, October is the best month for conceiving a boy baby.

Autumn babies, or those born between September and November, are more likely to live to 100 than those who were born in other times of the year.
