Stores Reopen with Social Distancing
Measures in Place
Image

Two of our Mount Rushmore Bookstores Sales Associates Kim Miller and Jameson Pfeifle prepare to greet visitors at Mount Rushmore before reopening the Information Center Bookstore to guests.
We opened two of our retail stores last week after being closed due to state guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Mount Rushmore Memories Airport Store reopened on May 18, and the Mount Rushmore Bookstore located in the Information Center at Mount Rushmore National Memorial reopened on May 23.

Of course, the health of both our employees and visitors are very important to us! We initiated social distancing throughout the stores and cleaning methods, installed sneeze guards for our cash wraps and limited the amount of people in the stores at a given time. We will continue to make updates to our procedures according to CDC guidelines.

We plan to reopen the Self-Guided Tour Building, the Visitor Center Bookstore and Mount Rushmore Memories on Main by the end of June. Stay tuned!

THANK YOU!
As a result of our Giving Tuesday Now Campaign, YOU helped us raise more than $800 to help house summer interns at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

The Mount Rushmore Bookstores’ Scholarship Program funds summer interns to assist park rangers in providing visitor services at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. These interns get valuable experiences working in a national park and shaping future careers, while ensuring that visitors to Mount Rushmore receive an experience of a lifetime.

This year, these interns will need to be housed individually rather than collectively to adhere to new health standards put into place by the National Park Service, resulting in more than $15,000 of additional costs. The Mount Rushmore Society has committed to assisting with these extra housing costs.

You can still help to support this effort by making a gift today.

Fireworks to Return to Mount Rushmore
July 3, 2020.
Image
As we reported last month, the National Park Service (NPS) announced the return of Independence Day Fireworks to Mount Rushmore National Memorial on July 3, 2020, after an 11-year absence. A Presidential visit is still a possibility as well! The State of South Dakota is diligently working with the National Park Service, Department of Interior and the White House to develop a safe and fun event. Details are still being ironed out, but please see the state's website here for more information on the event as it becomes available.

Senator John Thune Introduces Resolution for Mount Rushmore to Host Centennial Commemoration of Women’s Right to Vote
“The centennial passage of the 19th Amendment, to guarantee and protect women’s constitutional right to vote, deserves to have attention and recognition by the entire nation,”
says Diana Nielsen Saathoff , CEO of the Mount Rushmore Society
U.S. Senator John Thune recently introduced a joint resolution to formally request that U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary David Bernhardt authorize an audio and video display at Mount Rushmore National Memorial to honor and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guaranteed and protected women’s right to vote nationwide. The event will be similar to the popular 50th anniversary commemoration of the Apollo 11 mission, during which images were projected onto the Washington Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Story Time at Mount Rushmore

Listen to Story Time at Mount Rushmore as the Mount Rushmore Society team reads some of our favorite, fun and educational books about Mount Rushmore. This is a reading of One Baby Mountain Goat, a board book for young children. Read by staff member Patty Neumiller. Written by our very own Debbie Ketel Speas.

We will continue to share more readings over the coming weeks. You can check out prior Story Time's here.

Thank you to Cody Wiseman of Visit Rapid City for lending his expertise for this project. We couldn't have done it without you!
