And Sew On... November, 9th, 2020

Happy
Veterans Day!

Image

In just two days, on November 11th, we will celebrate our amazing veterans on Veterans Day 2020. Those of us of a "certain age" most likely know someone personally who served their country even back in WWII fighting to help stop the onslaught of fascism and tyranny. Yes, folks, we refer to them as the "greatest generation" for a reason. I am honored to still call one of those such folks a close friend. Marlin, a retired preacher, became life-long friends with my folks 7 years before I was even born.
One of my cherished memories of my good buddy was him recanting the following riveting story of his Navel service in the Pacific. Marlin and his sweet wife, Hazel, were staying overnight with my folks, and Debe, I, and our 3 young kids came over to enjoy dinner with them all. After a wonderful meal, we retired to the living room where our son, Ben, was playing with a Lego ship that he had already assembled. He proudly was showing my dad and Marlin his completed Lego vessel.
At this point Marlin exclaimed, that looks like the ship I was on in WWII.
That's all it took for Ben and me to scoot in a little closer hanging on every word of Marlin's first-hand experience. He was an anti-aircraft gunner on a ship in the Pacific that was headed to its next assignment when a group of
Japanese Zeros came a-calling!
As the loudspeaker on the ship called the crew to battle stations, he and the other seamen rushed to their positions! Perched high atop the firing position of his gun, toward the aft of the ship, Marlin and the other gunners engaged the Zeros in a fierce firefight who were intent on sinking their ship! As you could imagine, Ben and I were on the edge of our seats as Marlin reached the climax of his story. One of the last remaining Zeros had been damaged in the fight and was bearing directly down on his gunnery position attempting to commit kamikaze into the ship's deck. Marlin continued firing his gun with the intent to somehow avert the inevitable! By the grace of God, one of his munitions damaged the plane's tail, diverting its last-minute course into the sea adjacent to his ship instead of on its deck, saving Marlin and hundreds of other sailors!
Wow, what an amazing story. Ben and I still reminisce
about that evening even today.
My good buddy is now 95 years old and is still encouraging people and sharing other stories today. I am honored to consider Marlin as one of my heroes!
It is men and women like Marlin who we honor this week!
Most of us have a Marlin in our life who may not be a WWII vet but someone who has honorably served our country to defend our right to life, liberty, and
the pursuit of happiness!
To them and the Marlins in our country we say ... Thank You!
In honor of Veterans Day, we are proudly highlighting our patriotic fabric as our fabric of the week for 15% off 1 yd minimum cuts.

Maybe there is a Marlin or other veteran that you could thank with a patriotic quilt or another project!
