And Sew On...December 7th, 2020

"December 7th, 1941
A Date Which Will Live in Infamy"!

These words were spoken on December 8th, 1941 by Franklin Delenor Roosevelt, after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands. Whether you read these words in a textbook, saw them being reenacted in a movie, or heard FDR'S moving address live while huddled around a radio with your family, they evoke an emotional response.
The USS Arizona was one of 8 battleships that were damaged in the attack, with 4 of them being sunk on that fateful day. All of the 8 were later raised except the Arizona and six were repaired and were returned to the fleet to fight again. Visiting this hallowed place off Honolulu's shores has always been a goal of mine to remember those who sacrificed so greatly defending our republic, but has not been realized to date.
If traveling to Honolulu is out of reach,
the memory of that historic day can be experienced right here in Arizona at the Westley Bolin Memorial Plaza just East of the Arizona Capitol complex. This Memorial Plaza is home to several notable artifacts from the USS Arizona along with stories of some who were there. The plaza is an open-air public space displaying monuments, memorials, and gardens.
Along with the USS Arizona memorial display, the plaza has sections honoring WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the 911 Memorial, Navajo Code Talkers, law enforcement, and the Granite Mountain Hotshots to mention a few.
Westley Bolin Plaza is well worth the trip downtown especially if you're visiting from beyond Arizona and are interested in a field trip to learn more about some of Arizona's history.
Below is a link to the plaza and its address to help you find it.
