And Sew On...December 28th, 2020

Image

As the 2020 calendar counts down, I think we all can agree on something
this year and that is ... it couldn't come soon enough!
My thoughts then turned to consider what glee we might have as we join in the age-old tradition of singing Auld Lang Syne at the stroke of midnight while saying goodbye to this difficult last 12 months!
While envisioning  singing this wonderful old song with our grandkids, my next thought was I had better brush up on the words as I could only remember
a few of them like "old acquaintance be forgot",
and "Auld Lang Syne my dear".
This sent me quickly to Mr. Google where I could see all the lyrics and then learned of the origins of this song I have heard and sung my entire life.
This Scottish song is attributed to be penned by Scottland's most famous poet Robert Burns in 1788. The actual words did not see print until 1796
after Burns's premature death at the age of 37 from an illness.
As I was writing this newsletter, I took a break to head to the bank and grab lunch. While at the bank, I struck up a conversation with my teller friend, Sandra, who happens to be Scottish.
When I mentioned to her what I was preparing to write about this week, her eyes lit up. The celebration of the New Year, or Hogmanay- as the Scotts call it, is a big deal! In fact, 12/31 and 1/1 are national bank holidays in Scotland which probably comes full circle back to
Robert Burns and Auld Lang Syne's fame.

While in my fact-finding journey, I came across the below meaning of Auld Lang Syne and my spirits were lifted as I thought how apropos the song's definition is in the midst of a global pandemic.
So when we lift our glasses this Thursday night to welcome the
New Year, we say  ...
Prosperity and Good Health to YOU, our wonderful customers and friends, in this coming year!

Meaning of Auld Lang Syne and Cup O' Kindness

The Meaning of 'Auld' is "Old" and the meaning of 'Lang Syne' is "Long Since". The lyrics "We'll take a cup o' kindness yet" refers to the tradition of raising a glass or a cup o' kindness meaning with "good will, friendship and kind regard" and in remembrance of "noble deeds". The custom of drinking to "health" at a special gathering to the prosperity or good health of another dates back into antiquity. The old Christmas term 'Wassail' derives from Old Norse phrase 'ves heill' meaning "be healthy". So the next time you sing Auld Lang Syne, you'll now know it's meaning.

singer-songwriter, preforming this beautiful song.
