What is the future of The Sewing Box Quilt Shop?

by Wendy Airesman
The Sewing Box Quilt Shop in Somerset was born out of a passion for quilting back in 2011.  With no local fabric store or quilt shop in the area, it quickly became a destination for avid quilters.

As most of you know, a local bank has recently purchased our location at Georgian Place in Somerset.  This turn of events came out of the blue.  There were hopes of staying at Georgian Place in a different suite. However, that hope was recently dashed. A frantic and exhaustive search for an alternate location ensued, with no results as the deadline to vacate approaches quickly.

The good news is The Sewing Box will not close but will relocate to Meyersdale, PA.  After much prayer and soul searching, I've decided to go into semi-retirement and sell the business to one of my trusted staff members.  Many of you have already met April Hershberger.  April is purchasing The Sewing Box and will be moving it to 144 Eleventh Ave, Meyersdale, PA  15552.  The distance is about 10 miles south of Somerset and a stones throw from the second Meyersdale exit off Interstate Route 219.  (Extremely easy to find!)

Many things that you love about the shop will stay the same - fabric selection, classroom space, retreats, events, in-store notions discount, many of the same staff members, and I will be working and teaching.  April will continue the Janome dealership and honor all warranties.  Tim Watkins will also continue to service machines and honor all service contracts from the new location.

The Sewing Box has been my passion since the start.  So please realize I'm putting it in good hands!  April has youth, energy, vision, mad social media skills, and a love for quilting.  There's no doubt she will continue the legacy and take it to the next level.  It's my hope that you'll support The Sewing Box at its new location, just as you've done in Somerset.  The last day we'll be open for business in Somerset is March 18th, 2023.  Watch for a Grand Re-Opening in early April!

April:
April started working at The Sewing Box in 2022 to do the social media and help in the store part time. She has a degree from Frostburg State University and has lived in Somerset County for the past 18 years. An avid quilted (both traditional and English Paper Pieced) her passion for colors and fabrics make lines like Tula Pink her favorite. Yet her rustic roots (see her instagram @BarnHomeLiving) and love for nature help balance out the vibrance.
