Rufous Hummingbird
- adult male
Don't put away those hummingbird feeders!  Small numbers of Rufous Hummingbirds and other Western species overwinter in the Southeast. If you are lucky enough to host a wintering hummer and would like it banded, please let us know by email or on our Facebook pageor contact our pals Kyle and Emma directly at Banding Coalition of the Americas and they will try to put you on their schedule. Photos and videos are always appreciated.

Allen's Hummingbird
- second year male (Allen's are virtually indistinguishable from Rufous in the field. Precise, in-hand measurements are usually needed to confirm ID.)
Winter hummer feeding is easy--keep one or two feeders going and change the nectar at least every 7-10 days.
It stays fresher longer in cooler weather. Use plastic saucer-style feeders instead of glass ones that could crack. Nectar doesn't freeze until the temperatures dip below 27F or so, which isn't very often in the Atlanta area. You can bring it in at night or run a heat source to it. If you get a hummer, we will be happy to share some ways we've found that work to keep the nectar from freezing.

Calliope Hummingbird
- immature male
We can't guarantee you'll attract a winter hummingbird, but you won't unless you try! Karen T. hosted the Allen's Hummingbird above along with several Rufous over the years, one female returning four years in row! We knew it was the same gal since she was banded. ;)
