"When should I take down my hummingbird feeders?" --a question we often get this time of year.
We recommend that you do NOT take them down. Almost all Ruby-throats migrate out of Georgia by November 1st, but some do linger, especially if they were born late or may not be strong enough to make the long migration due to illness or injury. We've also banded several healthy overwintering Ruby-throats over the years. But, the main reason not to take them down is that several Western hummingbird species overwinter in our state, the majority being Rufous, followed by Calliope, Black-chinned Hummingbirds, and nine other species.

Leaving feeders up absolutely does not keep Ruby-throats from migrating, and you can possibly attract a very special Western visitor!

If you do host a hummingbird after November 1st and are interested in having it documented, we recommend you contact our friends Kyle and Emma with Banding Coalition of the Americas (BCA). They are doing most of the hummingbird banding in Georgia these days.

First of all, thank you so much for your kind messages, comments and extra shopping visits after our last newsletter. We feel so loved, and with your support, we can keep our stores going through this difficult year.
We have some awesome, new items to make your home and garden extra special this Fall, along with fun and stylish handbags, gorgeous, light-weight shawls and handcrafted wool hats. Celebrate your favorite football team with garden flags, doormats and bulldog statuary (Go Dawgs!) And most of all, we have everything you need to attract and watch migrating warblers, tanagers, grosbeaks, orioles and much more. Water sources, especially moving water, along with fruit and mealworm feeders are easy ways to attract migrants. Make sure to have your binoculars and field guides handy! Also, over the next six weeks, please turn out any unnecessary outdoor lights at night to help migrants fly safely.
