You never know what cool birds will drop in as they head north during April and May. Some may stay the Summer like Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Gray Catbirds (pictured above), but most are passing through and we get to enjoy them for a few weeks. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Baltimore Orioles and Indigo Buntings are a few that might visit your birdfeeders, but also listen and watch for warblers, vireos, tanagers, thrushes and much more in your birdbaths or hunting insects and berries in wooded areas. If you'd like to see more species, we highly recommend going on a guided bird walk with Birds Georgia or other local bird club. Most are free and open to beginners. Many of you are seeing large flocks of American Goldfinches at your feeders now. April is the peak month for them in our area, as they flock up and feast on their favorites, Sunflower (particulary Sunflower Meats) and Niger seed, to fatten up for migration. We are on the southern end of their breeding range, so while some do stay year-round, most go further north for the Summer. Males are molting into their bright breeding plumage now.
