Our guest celebrant will be Father Paul-Anthony Halladay, CH (MAJ), USA (Ret.), Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. Fr. Halladay is a retired, decorated 20-year veteran U.S. Army chaplain. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2000 and served at St. Pius X and St. Ignatius Parishes in Mobile and St. Columba Parish in Dothan before finishing Chaplain Candidate School at Fort Jackson, S.C., and entering active duty as a U.S. Army chaplain in September 2004. He is currently in charge of shepherding young men expressing an interest in the priesthood and U.S. Military chaplaincy through the process of discernment and formation. Fr. Halladay has graciously agreed to come to OLC to help us glorify God through honoring our country. Read Fr. Halladay's extensive bio HERE.

Why should the Faithful be Patriotic?
As we celebrate our nations 250 Anniversary, let us contemplate what it means to be faithful Catholics and patriotic citizens pleasing to God. Patriotism, after all, is a virtue. It is not to be confused with nationalism. Nationalism is a flawed ideology asserting that one's nation is inherently superior to all others, demanding unquestioning allegiance and prioritizing national interests over universal moral principles or human rights. Americans should be warry of nationalism.

Patriotism, however, is the moral virtue that inclines one to give honor, respect, and service to one’s native land or country of citizenship. Such honor is owed to one’s country not simply on account of any past or present greatness, but because it gives life, sustenance, nurture, and education to its inhabitants. We should recognize and strive to repay this debt by venerating our country and its symbols, by respecting its proper authority, and by giving aid and assistance to our fellow countrymen who are in need.
