Bird Watcher News         August 4th, 2026

Hummer numbers continue to grow as post-breeding dispersal and early migration is ramping up. Ruby-throats need to fatten up, often doubling their weight to make the long trek, and our feeders make great fuel stops.
That's why August and September are always our busiest months.

Let us show you our favorite hummingbird feeders (you can never have too many), help you fight wasps and ants, and keep everything clean. Saucer-style feeders like this Hummer High Rise above don't drip or leak, and are super easy to refill and clean.

Using suction cup window hummingbird feeders or small feeders like this HummBlossom (above) hung on a window bracket is a great way to see hummers up close and personal.

Whether you mix your own nectar (4 parts warm water to 1 part white sugar,) or use Cole's Nature's Garden, make sure to change it at least 2 to 3 times weekly when temperatures reach 80F. Never use red dyes or non-white sugars, which can be harmful.

As we announced in our last newsletter, we will be closing our Buford location on Sunday, August 23rd. This will most likely be the last week this location receives a Cole's delivery truck, so definitely stock up now if you haven't already. We have begun moving merchandise out of that store, but there is still a pretty good selection. That will ramp up after the Hummer Sale is over. There are lots of shelves, displays, baskets, posters and more that we are letting go of for little or free. Please stop by and say goodbye. We know it's a haul for most of you to drive across town to our other three locations, but we hope you will visit occasionally. If not, we urge you to shop at other local retail wild bird shops. Small businesses need your support in this economy more than ever. Thank you for 34 wonderful years in Gwinnett!
