We're back downtown through Christmas!
Kazoodles' pop-up store opened this week downstairs at Divine Consign, 904 Main St., bringing best-sellers, ASTRA's 2016 Best Toys For Kids, and some unique pocket money toys that aren't at the main store. We're open 10-5:30 Monday-Saturday, same hours as Divine Consign, and open until 8 tonight during Art Walk!

Coming Nov. 12:
Full Day of Fun!

Neighborhood Toy Store Day is one of our biggest days of the year, with fun planned all day.
Build with Fort Boards, create with Plus Plus, play games, experiment with a scientist from Yellow Scope, make a plate, try new Lauri Action Stackers and Magnutto magnetic kits.
Prizes, double Play Perks, and we'll kick off the toy drive for the Children's Center!
Look for times and details next week.

Play: It Builds Your Brain
Think about it. When we're born, four of our five major organs are complete — heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. The exception is the brain. From before we're born, trillions of connections form across the synapses — the microscopic gap between neurons — with every experience we encounter. The most significant phase of cognitive development is birth to age 3, but our brains keep creating these neuropathways all our lives.
The more stimulating a child's environment, the more synapses form, creating a superhighway in the brain for cognitive skills. And this doesn't just apply to children. We can develop our brains at any age by trying new things, solving puzzles, or breaking routines.
At a recent Certified Play Expert training in Chicago, given by ASTRA (American Specialty Toy Retailing Association), we learned about research that points to the importance of play for brain development (and human development) throughout our lives.
We also learned about play deprivation, depriving children of the experiences that are essential to their development. Dr. Stuart Brown, a psychiatrist with the National Institute for Play, studied homicidal young males and correlated incarceration with play deprivation. "People end up in jail because they can't trust the world," he said, and trust begins with parent-rich play experiences. "The opposite of play is not work, it's depression."
Play is deemed so important that the United Nations has declared that every child has the right to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child. Here are some other thoughts about play.
"Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being of children and youth." — Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, M.D., American Academy of Pediatrics
"When a child enters the realm of play, he also enters the realm of potential and possibilities." — National Lekotek Center
"Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold." — Joseph Chilton Pearce
"The one place in the world where self esteem is fully available is in play." — Peter Reynolds of Haba

We're all about kid-powered toys at Kazoodles. We seek out toys, books and games that engage kids' brains, muscles, imaginations and creativity. If a toy grows with a child or lasts through several kids, that's value. Our toys range for kids from birth to 108 — classic and innovative, with quality and safety as top priorities. Lots of special events, plus play areas around the store, beckon kids to come and play. Local and independent!
