The History & Heritage of Lake Orion's Jubilee
Image
Why is Lake Orion so special?!
While other towns in the 1800's were built around factories and work, Lake Orion evolved to support city dwellers flocking here to relax on our fresh water shore.
Lake Orion was created as vacation spot for people to escape the heat, noise and smog of the big city back in the 1800's.
Park Island, located on Lake Orion, was a major summertime resort with people taking the train from Detroit and Flint. Advertisements from that time promoted Lake Orion as the "Venice of the Midwest", "Paris of Detroit" and "Lake Orion, the One Best Resort".
Today, we still recognize and honor our heritage with the annual Jubilee carnival, the Dragon on the Lake races, and even our tagline "Where Living is a Vacation".

Starting in 1976, the Lion's Club created the Jubilee as part of a larger celebration for the Bicentennial. It has become one of their largest fundraisers and an annual summer event ever since. Residents see this as an unofficial "Lake Orion Reunion" as many people come back home to Lake Orion to celebrate with friends and family.
Last year the Lake Orion Lion's club raised $77,000+, with more than two-thirds of that amount distributed locally. As you can see, they live up to their motto "We serve".
Not only does the placement of the carnival in downtown honor our heritage, the Jubilee also creates a unique experience other towns can't duplicate while giving the Lake Orion Lion's club an opportunity to continue being a vital, charitable organization as they have been for the past 79 years.

However, all this fun comes at a price. Our downtown businesses miss you, their favorite customer, during this event. The lights, music and movement of the carnival, although beautiful, disrupt the atmosphere of our shopping district. When you come to enjoy the Jubilee, please don't forget the love you have for the downtown businesses who make our town what it is all year long. Stop in, give these shop owners a hug and buy something special!
