As requested: Here are some of the most baffling words in the gardener's dictionary for beginners.
If you have more questions after reading this list, feel free to stop by the store, email, call, or Facebook message us and ask! We would love to talk dirt with you!
Now you know:
  • Perennial: A plant, that can survive year after year by going dormant in the winter if left outside. Also known as a "hardy perennial" (Mums, Shasta Daisies, Sage, etc.)
    • Tender Perennials: Plants that can live for years but they do best in warm climates or indoors. They don't handle winter well.
  • Annual: A plant that has to be started again each year from seed, the original plant dies after each growing season naturally. (Think tomatoes.)
  • Biennial: A plant that takes two years to complete it's life cycle and die. (Think Mullein and Pansies.)
  • Turf: A mat of dirt that is covered in traditional grass, can be artificial or real.
  • Ornamental Grass: Grass varieties that are made to be decorative and create visual interest. (Look at the top center picture in this email.)
  • Transplant: When you take a plant that is already partially or fully matured/grown and move it from where it originally grew. (Anything you don't grow from seed in the ground is this and includes plants you get at a garden center.)
  • Succulent: Plants that have thick, fleshy leaves, meant to retain water. (Aloe Vera, cactus, etc.)
  • Foliage: A fancy word for leaves.
  • Cutting: A piece cut off of another plant, (at least a few inches and including a stem) when placed in soil and watered it could grow roots and become it's own plant.
  • Root Ball: The roots right below the plant, these are the roots the plant really needs to survive. Roots should be as big and spread out below ground as the plant is above ground but can be smaller if the plant has been kept in a container.
