Long, before the famous 1960s movie starring Elizabeth Taylor based on Cleopatra's life came out, the Egyptian queen had been a powerhouse in people's imagination. She was smart, she was sexy, she captured the hearts of many men during her time… and her fashion sense has transformed red-carpets and Hollywood celebs for a millenia. To say that her jewelry fashions have never gone out of style – at least in yours and my lifetimes, might be an understatement. Known for her affairs with the great Roman emperor Julius Caesar as well as the politician and general Mark Antony, she's portrayed in film and stories as beautiful, dangerous, and shrewd.

The truth, of course, is somewhere in between. What we do know is that Cleopatra lived from 69 BC to 30 BC. She was from the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egyptian rulers and the last queen of Egypt. She was highly intelligent. She may not have been as beautiful as portrayed in film and lore, but apparently her voice was melodious and her manners charming. Plutarch certainly seemed to think she was of remarkable beauty.

We often say that the jewelry that one wears is representative of your personality, not your size or external beauty. One look at the fashion and jewelry Cleopatra wore and you could easily believe that Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada was no match to Cleaopatra. Her fashion and style screamed power and wealth, especially her fascination and love for the bright and bold green hues of Peridot.

Peridot now called “the extreme gem” by the Gemological Institute of America, is literally born of fire and brought to light, one of only two gems (Diamond is the other) formed not in the Earth’s crust, but in molten rock of the upper mantle and brought to surface by the tremendous forces of earthquakes and volcanoes.
Additionally, Peridot has extraterrestrial origins, that’s right… it is believed by Egyptians to have fallen from the sky, found in rare pallasite meteorites. Peridot in its basic form, Olivine, was also found in comet dust brought back from the Stardust robotic space probe in 2006, and has been discovered on the moon, and detected by instrument on Mars by NASA’s Global Surveyor.
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that forms in only one color. When beautifully faceted, it evokes the lateness of summer and the onset of fall, as leaves morph from green to gold and hang like jewels in the sunlight.
It is no surprise Cleopatra loved this less-known gem. When set in gold and worn around the neck or bound to the left arm, she was said to have believed that it was a charm against sorcery and magic, evil spirits, night terrors, and madness. Considering her plight with keeping her status quo she must have worn it all the time and kept one eye open at night in fear of what her siblings were capable of, if given the chance, to take her throne.
So for those of you with August birthdays, embrace the boldness of your birthstone with power and confidence! Walk proud… or better yet… Walk like an Egyptian!
