Sol Maikon had 67 years experience in the jewelry industry in our community, 56 of those years with Smulekoff's Department Store. The flood aftermath and reorganization had enabled Sol to re-join Ginsberg Jewelers in October 2008.
A 2002 Gazette article quoted Sol as taking pride in "the level of integrity and honesty he has maintained over the years, and that sense of trust has helped him build a loyal following. 'It's extremely important, not just in jewelry, but in any business in which you have contact with people.' Over the decades he has nurtured many relationships with his customers, so much so that for some he says, 'It becomes a little more than a business relationship.' Sol has not only sold hundreds of engagement & wedding rings to customers, but he has also stood up with couples at their weddings, acted as witness for marriage licenses, and has even been invited to the hospital after a birth. 'It's very, very rewarding,' Sol says. 'There's nothing I've done that hasn't been for a happy occasion'."
Sol and the Ginsberg's have had a long and rich history together. After serving in US Navy during WWII, Sol worked at Ginsberg's Jewel Box store during his college years before joining Smulekoff's in 1952. Sol brought his tremendous experience, knowledge and personal touch back to Ginsbergs' four-generation jewelry firm.
