Good Afternoon Great-Gardeners,

The dog days of summer are now upon us. Did you know though that the ancient Greeks and Romans were the first to start calling the hottest part of summer "dog days"? The name came about because they thought that when the star, Sirius also known as the "Dog Star", found in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog), appeared in the night sky that it radiated extra heat toward the Earth. Siris, was the brightest star in the night sky during the hottest part of summer.

Speaking of being hot, last week we went to New York to visit Niagara Falls. I thought it would be cooler being close to the water, but boy was I wrong.

It's not the first time I have ever been there, but it was my first time on the American side. There is so much stuff to do that it was hard to fit it all in one day. Next time we plan to visit, I would stay a second day to finish seeing everything.

My daughter (having never been there) was amazed at how big the falls were. After a while though she was complaining it was too hot and she wanted to go home. The highlight of her day was getting wet on the Maid of the Mist. She wished the boat ride would have lasted longer.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, hit reply. I would love to hear from you. As always, have a great-gardening day.

Sincerely,
Holly

Corn is one of the most widely grown crops in the USA.

Only about 10% of the corn grown ends up on the dinner table as a side dish, while over 50% of it is used for livestock feed.

The rest of the crop is used to make everything from syrup and starch to whiskey and oil.

Corn flakes were so popular in the early 1900's that there was over 40 companies producing this breakfast cereal in and around Battle Creek, Michigan.

Trees Turning
Image
Yes, it is not your imagination. Some of the trees have started to turn colors and are losing their leaves.

Trees often form more leaves in the spring than their systems can support later in the season.

When the heat of summer hits the trees drop some of their leaves as a defense mechanism against water loss.

Newly planted trees also frequently drop leaves to compensate for root loss and reduced water absorption.

It is very important to maintain a good watering schedule for the first couple years that a tree is planted. This will help reduce shock and stress on the tree.

Make sure to water deeply versus shallow. Taking a hose and placing it on a trickle at the base of the tree for 30 minutes (depending on size of tree) will allow the water to soak deeply into the soil getting to the root system. Make sure before watering again that the soil  has dried enough by sticking your finger into the soil a couple of inches down in the ground around the base of the tree. If the soil is moist do not water.

Depending on how much rain and how hot the weather is depends on how often you will need to water.

Once the leaves have turned color they will not turn back to green. The leaves will eventually fall off the tree. As long as the buds are alive and the twigs are supple, do not remove the tree. It still has life.

Other reasons that may cause trees to lose leaves are over watering, insect problems, hail and wind.
Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew is a fungus which appears on the surface of the leaves. It can slow down the growth of the plant and weaken it over time.

Powdery mildew starts off as white spots which eventually grow to cover the entire leaf.

Crowded plantings, poor air circulation, high humidity and dampness can all lead to powdery mildew.

To prevent it from forming:
  • Avoid wetting the leaves of the plants, especially at night.

  • Improve the air circulation by thinning and pruning out areas of dense foliage.

  • Maintain a consistent watering regiment.

  • When planting avoid over crowding the plants.

If your plant already has powdery mildew follow these simple steps to stop the spread of it:
  • Remove all infected parts of the plant and destroy them by tossing into a garbage can. This prevents further spread of the fungus. Avoid composting them.

  • Spray infected plants with  fungicides such as Neem Oil, Daconil or Garden Safe. Make sure to spray when temperatures are below 90 degrees. Avoid spraying during the hottest part of the day as this will cause the plants to burn and may even kill them. Early morning or late evening is the best time. Make sure to follow all directions on the bottle.
