Treats on the Streets
Once again this year we will be participating in the Treats on the Streets program in downtown. This year it happens on Saturday October 29th from 11-2. Whether you take part in this fun event or do your trick or treating in your own neighborhood we hope that you have fun and are safe. |

Thank You
It seems like just a few days ago that we kicked off the month with our 24th Anniversary Event. Thank you to everyone who came in during those three days! We hope you had a chance to get some food and visit a bit. It was great to see everyone.

Kimberly's Carats
In 75 AD, the Roman scholar Pliny observed that some Opals carry such a play within them that they are equal to the deepest and richest colors of painters. Others simulate the flaming fire of burning sulphur and even the bright blaze of burning oil.
In Brazil in the 1500s, a conquistador washed dirt from a green Tourmaline crystal and confused the vibrant gem with emerald. His confusion lived on until scientists recognized Tourmaline as a distinct mineral species in the 1800s.

Some Interesting Jewelry:
We posted on Facebook about these two new types of jewelry that we recently discovered but thought that they deserved the newsletter too.
In Chinese culture, the green gemstone jade is commonly used to ward off evil spirits. With a "Yu Ahn" bracelet, you can ward off a different kind of evil — mosquitoes. Singapore jewelery brand, By Invite Only, released a new line of jade-inspired accessories that it claims will actually help repel mosquitoes. The Yu Ahn collection consists of a bracelet and two necklaces featuring pendants that hold refillable citronella balls, that can last up to seven days.
The idea for BulletProof Jewelry was born two years ago, when 17-year-old Carter Buchanan came across a video of a craftsman creating headphones out of bullets. When the shooting range couldn't sell Buchanan just the two casings he needed for his project, he walked away with an entire box, 1,500 9-mm bullet casings. He began creating studs for friends and family, but he never thought it would be more than a fun pastime. |

October Birthstones: Opal and Tourmaline
October has two birthstones. The first is Opal. In the Middle Ages, Opal was considered a stone that could bring luck because it was believed to possess all the virtues of each gemstone whose color was represented in the color spectrum of Opal.
The second or alternate birthstone for October is Tourmaline. While transparently clear, it comes
in a rainbow of colors … more than almost any other gem. |
