Ok, Maybe it's not a "BAN".
But it's a great start!

Fernandina Beach has stepped up it's game in saving the sea turtles !

This is what really happened :

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF FERNANDINA BEACH, FLORIDA, DISCOURAGING THE USE AND RELEASE OF BALLOONS ON ALL PUBLIC BEACHES; INTENDING TO INFORM AND EDUCATE THE PUBLIC THROUGH EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES AND SIGNAGE INFORMING THE PUBLIC AT EACH BEACH LOCATION; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

New signs will be posted at our local beaches!

<-----------

But the real solution is education!

And that starts with the LOCALS!

  • Deflated balloons floating in our ocean look a lot like the jellyfish that sea turtles eat.
  • But ingesting the plastic material can block their digestive tracts and lead to starvation.
  • And the string or ribbon attached to the balloons can entangle or strangle the turtles.

We just want to say a special thanks to Fernandina Beach's Vice Mayor, City Commissioner, and our friend
Len Kreger!
He and his friends at the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch really worked hard to make this happen!
